Skincare for Scarring FAQs

What causes scarring?

Most facial scarring comes from breakouts. Deep or picked spots damage the skin underneath, and it heals with too much or too little collagen. That leaves raised or pitted scars.

Flat pink, red or brown marks after a spot are not true scars. They fade on their own over months, and the right skincare speeds that up.

What should my routine look like, morning and night?

Pitted scars need in-clinic treatment such as microneedling, peels or laser. Skincare softens texture but will not fill them in. If your scars are deep, skincare alone will not be enough, so book a consultation with a skin clinic.

Which ingredients help, and which make it worse?

  • Help: retinoids to rebuild collagen, glycolic and lactic acid to smooth the surface, niacinamide and vitamin C to fade marks and daily SPF
  • Make it worse: picking or squeezing spots, sun without protection (it darkens marks) and harsh scrubs

How long before I see a difference?

Red and brown marks fade over two to six months with steady care. Surface texture improves after eight to twelve weeks of a retinoid or acid. Deeper scars change slowly, over six months or more, and usually need a clinic.

Can I use these alongside retinol, acids or SPF?

Yes. Use retinoids and exfoliating acids on separate nights, and add microneedle style serums like VT Cosmetics Reedle Shot 700 30ml only once your skin is used to them.

SPF every morning matters most. Without it, marks darken and take longer to fade.

If you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, skip retinoids and check with your doctor.
