Retinol in Skincare FAQs

What does retinol do for skin?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A. It speeds up skin renewal and boosts collagen, so over time it softens fine lines, smooths texture, fades marks and helps keep pores clear.

Who should use retinol, and from what age?

Most people can benefit from their mid twenties onwards, especially for fine lines, breakouts or uneven tone. If your skin is very sensitive or your barrier is damaged, wait until it feels comfortable, or try bakuchiol first.

How do I add retinol to my routine?

  • Night: cleanse, wait for skin to dry, apply a pea sized amount, then moisturise
  • Start slowly: two nights a week for two weeks, then every other night, then nightly if your skin is happy
  • Morning: SPF every day, as retinol makes skin more sensitive to sun

For the eye area, use an eye specific product such as Medik8 Crystal Retinal Ceramide Eye 3 15ml.

Can I use retinol with vitamin C, acids or niacinamide?

Yes, if you split them up. Vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night and exfoliating acids on nights you do not use retinol. Niacinamide can be used alongside retinol and often helps with comfort.

Can I use retinol when pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Skip retinol and other retinoids while pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, and check with your doctor. Azelaic acid and some gentle alternatives can help in the meantime.
