Azelaic Acid FAQs

What is azelaic acid and what does it do?

Azelaic acid calms redness, unclogs pores and fades dark marks. It is gentler than most acids, which is why it is popular for redness, rosacea prone skin and marks left by breakouts.

Who is it for, and do I need it?

It suits skin with redness, breakouts or uneven tone, especially if stronger actives irritate you. If your main goal is fine lines, a retinoid will do more.

How do I use it in my routine?

Apply it after cleansing, morning or night, then moisturise. Start once a day. A light serum such as Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Hyaluron Redness Soothing Serum 30ml is an easy place to begin. Mild tingling for the first week or two is normal.

Can I use it with retinol, vitamin C or other acids?

Yes. Azelaic acid sits well with niacinamide and retinoids. If your skin is reactive, use it in the morning and your retinoid at night. Leave a gap between it and other exfoliating acids. Wear SPF every day.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin, and during pregnancy?

It is one of the better options for sensitive and redness prone skin. Azelaic acid is also one of the ingredients doctors most often suggest during pregnancy, but always check with your doctor first.
