Skincare for Dehydrated Skin FAQs

What is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?

Dry skin lacks oil. Dehydrated skin lacks water. They feel similar and the fix is different.

Dry is a skin type you are born with and keep. Dehydrated is a condition, it comes and goes and oily skin gets it just as often. If your skin is shiny by midday but still feels tight, you are dehydrated rather than dry.

The quick test: dehydrated skin looks dull, feels tight after cleansing and fine lines look more obvious than they did last month. Dry skin flakes.

How do I actually rehydrate my skin?

Three layers, in this order, and the order is the whole trick.

  • Water on damp skin. A hydrating toner or essence like Beauty of Joseon Glow Replenishing Rice Milk or Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner
  • Humectants to hold it there. A hyaluronic acid serum such as SkinCeuticals HA Intensifier Multi-Glycan, Image Skincare Ageless Total Pure Hyaluronic Filler or Pestle & Mortar Pure Hyaluronic Serum
  • A seal on top so none of it evaporates. Obagi Hydrate LUXE, Dr.Reju-All All Advanced LC-Ceramide Barrier Cream or Anua 3 Ceramide Panthenol Moisture Barrier Cream

Skip the third step and the first two evaporate, often taking your own moisture with them. That is the single most common mistake with hyaluronic acid.

Why does hyaluronic acid sometimes make skin feel drier?

Because it is a humectant, which means it pulls water towards itself. In dry air it will pull that water out of your skin rather than out of the atmosphere.

Two rules fix it. Apply it to damp skin, never dry. And always put a moisturiser over the top within a minute or two.

Irish winters and indoor heating make this worse, so if a hyaluronic serum stopped working for you in November, this is almost certainly why.

I use a moisturiser already and my skin still feels tight. Why?

Usually because the moisturiser is sealing in nothing. If you apply cream to skin that has had all its water stripped by cleansing, you are locking in dryness.

Three things to check:

  • Your cleanser. If skin squeaks afterwards, it is too strong. Reform Skincare Gentle Hydrating Creme Cleanser or Image Skincare Vital C Hydrating Facial Cleanser are gentler starting points
  • Water temperature. Hot water strips lipids. Lukewarm, always
  • Timing. Moisturiser goes on within a minute of patting dry, while skin is still slightly damp

Also look at what else is in your routine. Over exfoliating, a retinol ramped up too fast or a clay mask used too often will dehydrate skin faster than any moisturiser can fix.

Does drinking more water help?

A little, and less than the internet suggests. If you are properly dehydrated your skin will show it, so staying reasonably hydrated matters.

But your body prioritises your organs over your skin, so drinking two extra litres does not reliably reach your face. The water that matters for how your skin looks is the water held in its outer layer, and that is governed by what you put on it.

Humidity is the bigger lever. A humidifier in the bedroom does more for dehydrated skin over an Irish winter than any amount of extra water.

How quickly will I see a difference?

Faster than almost any other concern. Hydration is the one thing in skincare that genuinely delivers in days.

Skin usually feels more comfortable within a day or two, looks plumper within a week and the fine lines that were really dehydration lines soften over two to three weeks.

If you have been at it a month with no change, the problem is probably not hydration. Look at your barrier instead, because a damaged barrier loses water faster than you can put it back.
