Lactic Acid FAQs

What is lactic acid and what does it do?

Lactic acid is a gentle AHA, an exfoliating acid first found in milk. It loosens the dead skin cells on the surface so skin looks smoother and brighter. It also helps skin hold on to water, so it is less drying than most acids.

Who is it for, and do I need it?

It suits dry, dull or rough skin, and anyone who finds glycolic acid too strong. If your skin is oily or breakout prone, salicylic acid is usually the better choice. If your skin already feels smooth and comfortable, you probably do not need it.

How do I use it in my routine?

Use it at night, after cleansing, two or three times a week to start. A toner such as Pestle & Mortar NMF Lactic Acid Toner 200ml or an exfoliating cleanser like Medik8 Surface Radiance Cleanse 150ml are easy ways in. Follow with a moisturiser, and wear SPF the next morning.

Can I use it with retinol, vitamin C or other acids?

Use it on different nights from retinol and other exfoliating acids. Vitamin C in the morning is fine. If your skin stings or feels tight, cut back to once or twice a week.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin, and during pregnancy?

It is one of the gentler acids, so many sensitive skins can use it a couple of times a week. Patch test first. Lactic acid at the levels used in skincare is generally considered fine in pregnancy, but check with your doctor if you are unsure.
