Bakuchiol FAQs

What is bakuchiol and what does it do?

Bakuchiol is a plant extract from the babchi plant. It works on fine lines, firmness and uneven tone in a similar way to retinol, but it is much gentler and does not usually cause peeling.

Who is it for, and do I need it?

It suits sensitive skin that cannot tolerate retinol, and anyone who wants a gentle start on ageing. If your skin handles retinol well, retinol will usually give stronger results.

How do I use it in my routine?

Apply it after cleansing, morning or night, then moisturise. Unlike retinol, it is not broken down by daylight, so you can use it in the morning. Wear SPF every day.

Can I use it with retinol, vitamin C or other acids?

Yes. Bakuchiol is gentle enough to use with vitamin C, niacinamide and most acids. Some people use it in the morning and retinol at night.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin, and during pregnancy?

It is one of the gentlest anti-ageing options for sensitive skin. It is often suggested as a retinol alternative in pregnancy, but research is limited, so check with your doctor first.
