If you are new to Obagi, start with Hydrate. It is the brand's everyday moisturiser, it sits comfortably on most skin and it asks nothing more of you than morning and evening use. Pair it with Gentle Cleanser if you want a matching first step. Only reach for a targeted treatment, CLENZIderm Pore Therapy for congestion or ELASTIderm Lift Up and Sculpt for firmness, once you know exactly what you are treating. That is the short answer. The rest of this guide is about why.

Why Obagi can feel hard to start with

Obagi grew up in dermatology clinics and the shelf still reads that way. CLENZIderm, ELASTIderm, Professional C. Names that sound like they came with a consultation attached.

So people tend to do one of two things. They buy nothing, because the range feels like it needs a professional to decode it. Or they buy too much, assuming a clinical brand only works as a full system.

Neither is necessary. Most of what makes Obagi worth knowing sits in a handful of formulas, and the right one depends on your skin, not on the brand's back catalogue.

How the Obagi range is organised

The easiest way to read the Obagi range is in two halves.

Everyday essentials are the products you use daily, whatever your skin is doing: a cleanser, a moisturiser and, if you want one, a hydrating serum. In this guide that means Hydrate, Gentle Cleanser and Daily Hydro Drops.

Targeted treatments are chosen for one specific concern and earn their place only if you have it. Here that means CLENZIderm M.D. Pore Therapy for oily, congested skin and ELASTIderm Lift Up and Sculpt for skin that is losing firmness.

Essentials are where to start with Obagi. Treatments are what you add. The full product list is a menu, not a routine.

Where to start with Obagi, by skin need

If your skin is

Start with

Why it fits

Dry, tight or simply wants comfort

Hydrate

Hydromanil, a humectant (an ingredient that draws water into the skin), releases moisture gradually, with shea and mango butters to soften

Sensitive, reactive or recovering after a treatment

Gentle Cleanser and Hydrate

A gel cleanser with aloe that does not strip, and a moisturiser made for daily comfort

Dehydrated, with makeup that clings to dry patches

Daily Hydro Drops under Hydrate

Niacinamide plus Abyssinian and hibiscus oils, in a serum that sinks in fast

Oily, congested, prone to blackheads

Pore Therapy after cleansing, then Hydrate

2% salicylic acid works inside the pore, where congestion starts

Losing firmness or bounce

ELASTIderm Lift Up and Sculpt

Zinc, copper and malonic acid to support elasticity, with polyglutamic acid for hydration

Pick the row that sounds most like you this month, not the one that sounds most impressive.

Common Obagi mistakes

Buying the system before the skin needs it. A clinical brand does not have to be used clinically. One well chosen moisturiser used every day will do more than five products used inconsistently.

Doubling up on salicylic acid. Obagi's CLENZIderm Daily Foaming Cleanser and Pore Therapy both carry 2% salicylic acid. Using both from day one is a fast route to dryness and peeling. Start Pore Therapy once a day after a gentle cleanse and build up only if your skin is comfortable.

Expecting a firming cream to behave like a treatment room. ELASTIderm is a consistent use product. Think weeks of twice daily application, not a visible lift by Friday.

Assuming oily skin does not need hydration. Oily and dehydrated can happen at the same time. Shine on the surface does not mean water in the skin, which is exactly where a serum like Daily Hydro Drops earns its place.

The Obagi edit: where to start with Obagi

Obagi Hydrate: the place to start

If you buy one Obagi product, make it this. Hydrate is built around Hydromanil, which holds water and releases it slowly so skin stays comfortable through the day. Obagi's own testing puts that at up to eight hours. Shea butter, mango seed butter and avocado oil give it a soft, cushioned finish without feeling heavy, and it is formulated so it does not clog pores.

It is the kind of moisturiser you finish, then rebuy without thinking. It now comes in a jar, so you can get every last bit.

If you are torn between Hydrate, Hydrate Luxe and Hydrate Light, our side by side of the Obagi Hydrate moisturisers goes through each one by texture and skin type.

Obagi Gentle Cleanser: the quiet first step

A mild gel that removes makeup, oil and the day without leaving that squeaky, tight feeling. Apricot kernel oil keeps it soft, aloe vera calms. It is designed with dry and sensitive skin in mind, but it is easy enough on the skin that most people will simply enjoy using it. It is also the natural partner to Hydrate: two steps, morning and evening, done.

Obagi Daily Hydro Drops: for skin that wants more than moisturiser

Some skin drinks a moisturiser and still feels tight by lunchtime. That is where Daily Hydro Drops comes in. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3 that supports the skin barrier, sits alongside Abyssinian and hibiscus oils, which are rich in fatty acids that help skin hold on to moisture. It is light, quick to absorb and sits neatly under Hydrate. Use it on the face, neck and chest, morning and evening.

Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. Pore Therapy: for oily, congested skin

This is a treatment, not a toner you use because you feel you should. Pore Therapy is a 2% salicylic acid liquid. Salicylic acid is a BHA, or beta hydroxy acid, which dissolves in oil and so can work inside the pore to clear the buildup behind blackheads and breakouts.

Swipe it on with a cotton pad after cleansing and let it dry. It contains menthol for a cooling feel, which oily skin tends to love and sensitive skin may not. Start with once a day. If your skin is already reactive, this is not your first Obagi step.

Obagi ELASTIderm Lift Up and Sculpt: for skin losing its bounce

The ELASTIderm line is Obagi's answer to skin that has started to lose elasticity, that slight softening along the jaw and cheeks. Lift Up and Sculpt is the moisturiser of the range. Its core is a complex of zinc, copper and malonic acid that Obagi developed to support the skin's own elastin, the protein that lets skin spring back. Polyglutamic acid, a humectant that holds a lot of water at the surface, keeps it plump and comfortable.

It is richer than Hydrate and more considered in price. Choose it if firmness is your main concern. If it is not, Hydrate will serve you better.

The best Obagi products to build a routine from

Morning

  1. Gentle Cleanser
  2. Daily Hydro Drops, if your skin is dehydrated
  3. Hydrate or ELASTIderm Lift Up and Sculpt
  4. SPF, every day. The Obagi Sun Shield Tint SPF50 gives a sheer wash of colour and comes in Warm and Cool

Evening

  1. Gentle Cleanser
  2. Pore Therapy, if congestion is your concern
  3. Daily Hydro Drops, if using
  4. Hydrate or ELASTIderm Lift Up and Sculpt

If you use Pore Therapy, the morning SPF is not optional. Exfoliating acids leave freshly revealed skin more exposed to the sun.

The takeaway

You do not need the whole Obagi range. You need the right starting point. For most people that is Hydrate, with Gentle Cleanser beside it. Add Daily Hydro Drops if your skin needs more water, Pore Therapy if congestion is the issue and ELASTIderm if firmness is. Hydrate on its own clears our €75 free shipping threshold, and every order comes with a free sample.
