The Skin Diary: skin science that goes deeper

the Skin Diary products sitting on a picnic bench outside in direct sunlight

The Skin Diary is a dermatologist-founded skincare brand built on a premise that sounds simple but is genuinely rare: that the most effective skincare starts at the cellular level and works outward from there. Founded in 2023, available in Ireland now and stocked at SkinShop.ie as one of a small number of selected Irish stockists. Two products. A morning SPF and an evening retinoid treatment. Both with published clinical data behind them.

Here is what you need to know.

The people who built The Skin Diary

The Skin Diary was founded by four dermatologists: Dr Clare Kiely, Professor Chris Griffiths OBE, Dr Tamara Griffiths and Dr Richard Barlow. Between them they bring 125 years of combined dermatological expertise and more than 900 peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Professor Chris Griffiths was part of the research team that first discovered how topical retinoids repair the cellular structure of aged skin. That research did not just inform a product. It became the scientific foundation that the entire modern anti-ageing skincare industry was built on. Night Repair Therapy is the culmination of that work. Dr Tamara Griffiths serves as President of the British Association of Dermatologists and led the clinical development behind the formula. Both products were developed at the University of Manchester.

Dr Clare Kiely is a consultant dermatologist and laser surgeon specialising in photodamage and skin cancer. Her clinical background shaped everything about how Age Defence approaches UV protection at a cellular level. Dr Richard Barlow brings further depth from decades of skin biology research.

The reason the credentials matter is not for their own sake. It is that these are people who spent entire careers watching what ageing does to skin at a biological level, in real patients over real time. They built this brand because they knew what existing products were missing.

What most skincare is not addressing

There is a process happening inside ageing skin that the industry has been slow to tackle.

As skin ages, certain cells stop dividing and repairing themselves but do not clear out of the tissue. These are called senescent cells, sometimes referred to as zombie cells. They do not sit there passively. They actively release inflammatory signals that disrupt the healthy cells working around them, accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin and drive every visible sign of ageing you are currently trying to address with your routine.

The Skin Diary's cell to surface approach is built around this reality. The philosophy is to work at the cellular level first and let the visible results follow. Every formula is tested across three dimensions: at the cell, measured on the surface and perceived in the mirror. That testing standard is what separates this brand from most of what is available at a similar price point.

Age Defence: your morning product

Age Defence is an advanced daily moisturiser with SPF 50 and PA++++ protection. The short description reads: Phytoshield DNA Repair technology to defend against UV ageing and deliver all-day hydration. The reality behind that is worth unpacking.

Age Defence combines three modes of protection in one step: encapsulated sunscreen filters, DNA repair enzymes and plant flavonoid antioxidants. The encapsulation technology means the sunscreen filters are delivered in a phospholipid shell with the same structural logic as your skin cell membranes, so the actives reach the skin rather than degrading on the surface. Most SPF moisturisers do not work this way.

The DNA repair enzyme science is inspired by Nobel Prize-winning research into how cells recover from DNA damage. The two enzymes in Age Defence support the skin's natural biological repair mechanisms rather than simply blocking UV radiation after the fact.

In clinical gene expression testing on UV exposed skin models, Age Defence produced a 3.7 times reduction in the key biomarker linked to collagen damage, a 3.8 times reduction in the marker for inflammation and a 2 times reduction in the marker associated with senescent cell accumulation, compared to untreated UV exposed controls. In consumer trials, 91 per cent said their skin felt nourished and 88 per cent noticed a healthy glow.

The texture is lightweight with a velvet matte finish that absorbs instantly and layers cleanly under makeup without pilling.

Sun damage is the primary driver of visible skin ageing. Not time passing, not stress and not genetics. It is accumulated UV exposure. In Ireland, where cloud cover gives people false confidence about UV radiation, that exposure is relevant throughout the entire year. An SPF moisturiser that works at a cellular level is not an optional extra. It is the most important step in any anti-ageing routine.

Night Repair Therapy: your evening product

Night Repair Therapy is where the structural repair happens and it has one of the strongest clinical profiles of any product in its category.

Developed at the University of Manchester by Professor Chris Griffiths OBE and Dr Tamara Griffiths, Night Repair Therapy has been clinically proven to produce a 2 times increase in collagen and a 2 times increase in elastic fibres. Independent clinical studies recorded a significant reduction in wrinkles in as little as 7 days. Consumer trials showed that 93 per cent said their skin looked healthier and 86 per cent noticed a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

The product is described by the brand as 20 times more effective than retinol in cellular support, without irritation. That claim is rooted in how the retinoid is delivered. The retinoid used is retinyl palmitate, a stable ester form of vitamin A that converts to active retinoid inside the skin without causing the surface inflammation that makes prescription retinoids and standard retinol so difficult to tolerate. Alongside it are Matrixyl 3000, one of the most studied peptide complexes in skincare science for stimulating collagen synthesis, bilberry extract to inhibit the enzymes that break down hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin and lycopene from organic tomato skin to protect against oxidative stress.

Zero irritation was recorded across all participants in the clinical trials. If you have tried retinoids and abandoned them because of flaking or redness, the issue was formulation. This is what better formulation looks like.

Three things worth knowing

  1. Retinoids are the most clinically validated anti-ageing ingredient in skincare, more so than peptides, vitamin C or any botanical extract currently trending. The reason most people abandon them is the irritation during the adjustment period. That is a formulation problem, not an ingredient problem. A formula that delivers retinoid level results without that response is not a lesser option. It is a smarter one.
  2. Sun damage is the primary cause of visible skin ageing. The majority of the lines, the loss of firmness and the texture changes you are seeing are accumulated photodamage. The most effective thing you can do for your skin right now is protect it consistently from today, not reactively once the damage is already visible.
  3. Two products is a deliberate clinical choice. Layering competing actives causes inflammation and compromises barrier function, which are the precise conditions in which senescent cells accumulate fastest. The Skin Diary is a complete morning and evening routine in two steps and that simplicity is the point.

Who this is for

Anyone who wants their skincare to work at the level where the problem actually exists. The cell to surface approach becomes most relevant from your mid-twenties onwards, when senescent cell accumulation begins to accelerate and cell turnover starts to slow, but both products address a wide range of skin ages and concerns.

New to retinoids or put off by past experiences with irritation? Night Repair Therapy is the most accessible clinical grade entry point we know of. Want to genuinely upgrade your daily SPF moisturiser? Age Defence is operating in a different category to most of what is available in Ireland. Using both together gives you a complete routine built on published dermatological research rather than ingredient trends.

FAQs

What is The Skin Diary and is it available in Ireland?

The Skin Diary is a dermatologist-founded skincare brand built on cell to surface technology, an approach that addresses the cellular causes of skin ageing rather than treating surface symptoms. It was founded in 2023 by four consultant dermatologists with over a century of combined clinical experience and is available now in Ireland at SkinShop.ie.

What is cell to surface technology?

Cell to surface technology is The Skin Diary's guiding scientific philosophy. It is based on the biology of cellular senescence, the accumulation of dysfunctional cells in the skin that release inflammatory signals, disrupt healthy surrounding cells and accelerate collagen breakdown. By working at a cellular level to prevent and address this process, the products deliver results driven by genuine biological change rather than temporary cosmetic effect.

What is the difference between Age Defence and Night Repair Therapy?

Age Defence is a daytime SPF moisturiser that combines encapsulated UV filters, DNA repair enzymes and antioxidant protection to prevent cellular damage and collagen degradation throughout the day. Night Repair Therapy is an evening cream that actively repairs and rebuilds collagen and elastin using retinyl ester, cell-communicating peptides and botanical actives. They are designed to work as a pair: protect by day, repair by night.

Is Night Repair Therapy suitable if I have never used a retinoid before?

Yes. It uses retinyl palmitate, a stable and gentle ester form of vitamin A, rather than conventional retinol or prescription tretinoin. Clinical trials showed zero irritation across all participants, making it one of the most accessible retinoid-based formulations available for people who are new to retinoids or have experienced sensitivity with other products in the past.

Do I need SPF every day in Ireland?

Yes, throughout the entire year. UV radiation penetrates cloud cover and reaches the skin consistently regardless of season or weather. Cumulative unprotected UV exposure is the primary driver of premature skin ageing. Age Defence makes daily SPF a step with genuine cellular level protective benefit rather than just a filter applied on top.

How long before I see results from The Skin Diary?

Most people notice improvements in brightness and skin texture within the first few weeks of consistent use. Deeper structural results, including visible improvement in firmness and a reduction in fine lines, build over several months. Consistent daily use is what separates results-driven skincare from skincare that simply promises results.
